Anime Quiz Wiz

Who Can Enter?
The Anime Quiz Wiz is open to all non-staff Kon-goers. Akin to real quiz shows, would-be participants are asked to take a quick pre-test, available at the Information Booth on Friday (all day) or Saturday (Opening – 6pm). (The Information Booth is located in the Third Floor’s Center Concourse, near the Registration Booth.) The official contestants will be announced live at the start of the Quiz Wiz festivities on Sunday.

What types of questions are there?
This year’s Quiz Wiz is split into two divisions, “Novice” and “Otaku:”

- Novice is for the casual fan: those who are either just getting into anime/manga or those who have already been watching/reading a few series here and there. The difficulty level should be on par with previous Quiz Wiz events.
- Otaku is, as you may have guessed, for the hardcore: those who aren’t ashamed to commit the names of minor characters, major directors’ minor works, etc. to memory. If you thought the previous Quiz Wiz questions were too easy, this is the level for you.

Once the pre-test registration has finished, the top three (3) scorers, determined by % of correct answers followed by time taken, will qualify for the Otaku level. Of the remaining entrees, three (3) will be randomly selected for the Novice level.

So how does the Quiz Wiz work?
Contestants will participate in a Jeopardy!-styled quiz show. Due to time constraints, instead of two sets of 30, each difficulty level will consist of one set of 40 (8x5) questions, followed by a Final Jeopardy! question when time or the questions run out. The Novice contestants will take the stage first. Once their game ends, the Otaku qualifiers will be summoned.

After the contestants have been called to the stage, each will receive a paddle (This may change to a buzzer). The top scorer in each category chooses the first question. ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE READ ALOUD PRIOR TO APPEARING ON-SCREEN, after which point contestants have five seconds to answer. Whoever raises their paddle (buzzes) first gets first crack at the answer. Correct answers yield the appropriate points and the selection of the next question. There will be no penalty for incorrect answers.

Once time (or the question list, whichever’s sooner) runs out, the game will move into Final Jeopardy. Contestants will be asked to wage any to all of their current point totals. After the question is asked, the contestants will have 30 seconds to write down their answer on a dry-erase board. Answers revealed, points tallied, whoever’s on top takes it. In the event of a tie, the host will ask tiebreaker questions until a single winner is determined.
