Video Art Showcase Theater

The Kawaii Kon Video Art Showcase Theater (VAST) is a great opportunity for people of all skill levels to display their video-editing and story-telling abilities.

From small-scale amateur screenings and informative 'how-to' sessions with video art veterans, to our ever-growing VAST Contest, the Kawaii Kon Video Art Showcase Theater offers a number of options for interested video artists to promote their work.

What is 'Video Art?'

Kawaii Kon defines video art as a fan made video production blending a variety of audio- and video sources into a new form of expression.

While our programming in previous years has been predominately centered on Japanese animation music videos - videos composed of Japanese Animation clips set to music - VAST is dedicated to expanding our video offerings to include all forms of video art and provide a broader array of entertainment to our audience.

Anime Music Videos at Kawaii Kon

VAST sponsors Anime Music Video (AMV) screening blocks held throughout the Kawaii Kon program schedule. Each block offers the VAST to showcases a different genre of AMV the various genres of AMV’s, ranging from comedy and action, to drama and dance.

In 2008, VAST implemented the very popular Viewers’ Request Block and it will be returning to Kawaii Kon in 2009.

Video Art How-To Sessions

VAST also sponsors video art How-To sessions at Kawaii Kon. Ranging from the very basics of starting your first video art project to more advanced tips and techniques from award-winning video artists, the How-To sessions offer a variety of topics for varying skill levels.

VAST Contest

The Video Art Showcase Theater’s premiere event is the VAST Contest where video artists from around the world enter their works into the competition. The works are scored by our panel of judges prior to the start of Kawaii Kon: at the convention, entries are screened in our Main Events room before a live audience and the winners are announced at its conclusion.
