Volunteering for Kawaii Kon 2013

Postby Toki » Tue Apr 17, 2012 9:31 am

Volunteer sign-ups for Kawaii Kon 2013 is now open!

Some basic rules are that we require our volunteers to attend two staff meetings throughout the year, as well as a mandatory meetings that are held on the Thursday immediately before the convention. We also ask that each volunteer puts in 15 hours of their time throughout the weekend in order to receive the volunteer benefits, such as a free pass to the convention.

If you're not sure if you'd like to volunteer or not, we do hold meetings throughout the year (as mentioned before) that you are more than welcome to attend. At these meetings, you can talk to myself as well as any of the other department directors. While we do have a listing of department descriptions, attending a meeting will help you to get a better idea of what department you'd feel comfortable in and make it easier for you to choose which department you'd like to be a volunteer for. Please note that you must be 15 years old at the time of the convention in order to volunteer. For those of you that meet that age requirement, but are under 18 at the time of the convention, we ask that you fill out the parental consent form, which can be found here.

If there are any questions, feel free to email me at staffing@kawaii-kon.org or PM me through the Kawaii Kon message board. If not, you are always welcome to see me at any of the volunteer meetings.

We look forward to working with you in 2013!

I know it's only been a month since kon but do you have any dates yet for the volunteer meetings?

pardon my request... and i'm not exactly sure how this would work. but I would like to volunteer to run sound tech for eyeshine (at least).

another thought/request I had was: may I (if they are alright with it) be Eyeshine's P.A./runner?
thank you

Kawaii Kon volunteers only assist with convention-specific activities (ex: attendee registration, management of dealer booths, etc.). You could apply for the tech department which would allow you to help with Eyeshine's events, but that would also require you to perform tech duties for any other events required by the department director as well. As for being a personal helper to the band, you would have to contact Eyeshine themselves as we do not handle those things.

I was hoping you would say I had to contact them directly. I didn't want to till it was confirmed (on that being the course I would have to take).

as for tech department, where and how do I apply for that?

I am still on the fence on whether I would volunteer this year, but since I haven't attended the last two meetings I would definitely have to go to the ones this month and February. I still have some questions regarding what certain departments would entail, which would no doubt be answered in the meetings.

I'd like to be security (age: 21), partially because I have no idea what the other departments would require (e.g. Artists Alley, Dealers Rooms, Events, etc.). Is it all right to attend the meetings without submitting an application form beforehand?

speaking of the meetings I might have a problem with those since I work Tuesday to sunday from varying times around 4pm to 10pm.

to apply for tech, apply here and then select tech as your 1st preference of department you would like to work under.

meetings are held from 11am - 1pm usually. Sometimes we end an hour early, but that all depends on your department too.

Yes you may attend a meeting without submitting an application. We will have some on hand.

For Eyeshine's sound tech, you may ask the tech director, however we already have professional sound techs performing such tasks. As for being a runner, that task is done by the events department. But they do a lot of running for other guests as well.

I just applied, but didn't realize there was only one more meeting set for next month. Does this mean I can't volunteer?
(it would be helpful if someone put the known/already passed meeting dates on the main website.)

Since there is only one meeting left, new applicants are exempt from the 2 meeting minimum, but they MUST attend the last meeting.
