Moonlight Magic Ball music suggestions

Postby kekumanshoyu » Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:10 am

Please post here what songs you'd like to hear at the ball.
The type of music we are include are Ballroom Dance Music and Anime Theme (Ballroom Dance-type). It may be from an anime, J-drama, K-drama etc.
You may include English, Japanese, and Korean. I dunno about other languages but just post it here and I may approve.

Anyways if I approve, I will include these into the mix of songs playing for the night.

Mellow and waltzy?

C'mon, what about Salsa and ECS (East Coast Swing) and Cha-Cha? All good dances. We need more than just Waltz.

I'm told you can Salsa to the Streefighter theme.

And you can totally swing/jive/jitterbug/lindy to the Hare Hare Yukai.

Thank you for your suggestions, however the Moonlight Magic Ball is a "Formal" ball. Sorry but salsa, cha-cha, and swing won't match with the formal theme.

I find it amazing how instrumentals from some anime and video games can be very appropriate for balls like this.

I'll send a list of songs via PM, since I still need to gather all the music I've got. XD

How so? Out of curiosity, have you actually tried those dances?

You can dance Lindy and Salsa in "formal" style, using closed position and slower music. If you have nothing but waltz, thats a recipe for boredom. Waltz isn't the most exciting dance.

Also, even formal event's I've been to often have hip-hop/pop music nowadays. Not sure what's up with the arbitrary standard you're using.

Yes I have done a lot of dancing :)

And I've reconsidered what I had said. I'm going to include those themes. Yes, I agree some "formal" events have hip-hop/pop music nowadays... but I won't be including that. Just Ballroom Dances

I'm going to edit my first post. But I would like some anime themed music too (I don't know about the Street Fighter theme song... lol)

Most formal ballroom events i've been to nowadays have Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Two Step, Lindy Hop/WCS, ECS, and several latin beats, most often Cha-cha, Salsa, Rumba, and Merangue.

It's all still ballroom dance, even if Salsa and WCS are done in less formal settings more often nowadays.

Thanks!

Just a note: most of the people attending the ball will not have ballroom experience, hence keeping the songs geared towards more basic dances like the waltz.

The basic step of any dance takes only a few minutes to learn, and I'd contest the notion that the basic step for waltz is 'easy'. Compared to salsa or tango, sure, but still more complex than Swing or Cha-Cha. Turns and other simple moves are easiest to learn for East Coast Swing and Cha-Cha as well. The basic turn in waltz is relatively difficult, IME.

A lot of dances can (technically) be done to any 4/4, and waltz can be done to most 3/4 beats.

Which is most music, really, since those are the most common measures. So suggest moar music peoples! It doesn;t have to be music that is designated as "dance."

Of the top of my head, the Intro and Ending songs of several series are danceable. Noir and Neon Genesis Evangelion come to mind.

"Inner Universe" by Yoko Kanno, from Ghost in the Shell OVA. pretty sure you can salsa to this.

"Fly me to the Moon", from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The 3/4 (original) version is a Waltz, and the 4/4 (Sinatra) version is a swing beat. (yes, they were actually designed for these specific dances.)

"Moonlight Densetsu" by far-too-many-people, from you-should-know. Given that ballroom is a recurring visual theme in SM, i suspect that a lot of SM music is useable as ballroom music. This one certainly is.

If we're allowing non-specifically-anime, "Rockin' Robin" is great dance music, and you can't go wrong with the Blue Danube Waltz

I'm just gonna scan my ipod and see what strikes me as "ballroom-y"
some suggestions. the * ones are the ones I really want to hear played at the ball.

waltz:
*chihiro no waltz
howl's moving castle theme
Bolero (Tohoshinki) (faster so probably for a viennese waltz)
Masquerade (Phantom of the Opera) (6/8 time I think, not sure)
other various Jazz Waltzes

salsa/other latin:
Valenti (BoA (i've found that most of BoA's faster songs, like Peace B;ID among others, are good for this genre))
Magnet (vocaloids)
Save the Last Dance for Me (Michael Buble)

slow 4/4: (basically any ballad-y, slow song should in theory work)
Kiss me Goodbye (Angela Aki)
*Fly Me to the Moon (Frank Sinatra (lots of jazz-y songs will fit into this category actually)
Find the Way (Nakashima Mika)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMcBMlA9 ... re=related can you play this in the beginning? it's Vocaloid's Alice in Music Land (super cute and relates to the Wonderland theme)
Home (Angela Aki)
Xia Xue ("Summer Snow") (Fahrenheit)

fast 4/4:
Where or When (Fran Sinatra)

Jive:
Shy Boy (Secret (that's the name of the group)
Wish (Arashi)
Ev'rybody Wants to be Cat (Aristocats OST (disney))

Tango - I don't think I heard any tango songs last year, although there aren't really that many. These ones are pretty short so should be easy to squeeze in.
Kuroneko no Tango - Ore no Imouto
45 Degrees Tango - Bleach

Waltz
Butou - Full Metal Alchemist
Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win - Evangelion
Waltz for the Moon - Final Fantasy VIII

Swing
Engage - Godannar
Mr Moonlight Ai no Big Band - Morning Musume

Sakura Kiss - Ouran High School (Instrumental strings version)
First Love - Utada Hikaru
Ima wa Tomodachi - Macross II
Diamond Crevasse - Macross Frontier
Fly Me to the Moon - Evangelion (There are both 3/4 and 4/4 versions available)
Tuxedo Mirage Instrumental - Sailor Moon
Moonlight Densetsu Piano - Sailor Moon
Makenai - Sailor Moon (Instrumental sad version)
Renai Circulation - Bakemonogatari
Staple Staple - Bakemonogatari

What dances are going to be taught at the primer this year anyway?

They should focus on 1 or two dances, because trying to teach a bunch just means people don't learn enough to actually dance.

Swing and Cha-Cha are easiest to learn, but Waltz isn't too hard either, and is classic - it also is a 3/4 beat unlike the 4/4 beat for almost all other dances - if there's 3/4 music, it's pretty much going to be waltz by default.

I suggest Moonlight Dentatsu again, and the 3/4 version of Fly me to the Moon if you want a Waltz.

You can Swing to the Hare Hare Yukai.
