Any underrated series pleasing to the soul?

Postby pizzamanilla » Wed May 25, 2011 5:29 pm

Arr! We be ashore pluderin' the ole shipyards fer sum fresh n' forgotten booty! Ye mateys be willin' ta haul in tales from the deep?

Me booty:
Q-Ko-chan
The Witch of Artemis
A-Channel (new, yet underrated)
Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro
KuroZakuro

Just some booty I be sharin' with ye.

I hope my pirate speech isn't that bad. I'm basically saying to list down any underrated (as in not close to mainstream or sometimes not too commonly known or popular, but not to many) series that are a good read. I based my selection off of how many views it has on several sites and the amount of reception it has.

ef-a tale of memories

I don't stream my anime, so I don't know how popular this series actually was. Although, in my mind, I imagine that it went pretty much unnoticed. The series had some really artsy shots and some pretty interesting ones also. This was the first series in which I actually yelled at my monitor, "Why!? Why would you do that!? What the F*ck!?" Anyway, this is the series why Chihiro subs is named what it is.

No idea if it's underrated but out of all my anime friends only one has actually read/watched this series-- Genshiken.

i think that this series should get more attention:

01) Natsume's Book of Friends (Seasons 1-4) - It's not really a popular show, I don't think... but it really hits home =)

Not sure what you mean by "pleasing to the soul" but if you mean just a really entertaining and/or interesting anime that's underrated, then I recommend Le Chevalier D'Eon

I like Heaven's Memo Pad.
It reminds me a teensy bit of Global Frequency (the leaked pilot of the cancelled series is totally worth looking for), but much more sanitized.

I personally find the who premise of Zipang awful, but I know a guys who swears by it - on a purely technical level, it is pretty decent. But seeing as I have family who still recall some of the horrors of the "Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere"...

I actually like live action Japanese movies - they often are willing to explore side of life hollywood never pays any heed to. The Star Reformers was actually pretty fun, while also carrying a pretty good sociopolitical message. And Departures was purely amazing. I highly recommend it.

For anyone interested in sci-fi war stories, I'd recommend Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn just to get them started. It has all the pretty animation that looks great on blu-ray while still having a captivating story and characters. Also Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket is a great choice too. And considering War In the Pocket is only 2 hours, it's not really a waste if you don't like it. ;)

+1 to this. UC Gundam doesn't get enough love in the west. Too many people think of the boy band (Wing) when they think of Gundam, instead of the war stories in the Universal Century time line.

0083 Stardust Memory and 8th MS Team are heavily action packed and not too long either. Wish they'd animated the New Decides/S-Gundam series -it'd be awesome.
