novan wrote:I know exactly what you mean about Linebarrles. The first part I could not stand him and just want to beat some sense into him. I didn't like him then and I didn't really care him through out the rest of the series even though his character did have development. Pretty much going from a power hungry, incredbily misguided sense of justice to a less power hungry better sense of justice. Yeah not a whole lot now that I think about it. The only thing that really kept me watching was the other funny and ridicullous characters. They were far more interesting then the main two and very funny to watch. And for gundam wing it's cool. As I look back it's not as grand as I remembered it as kid. There are far better ones that I've come to like over the years. One of them being the 8th MS Team.

I found out that I actually still have Linebarrels on my HDD. I'll try to give it another go, since I really didn't make it as far into the series as I had previously thought. Although, I'm seriously thinking about just skipping to the point where he joins JUDA.

GUNDAM WING RANT!!!
As for Gundam Wing, I didn't always dislike it. There was a time where I thought it was pretty cool(1997-2000). To be honest, the series has extremely good use of music. The music was great and really got you pumped during the action scenes. As a kid, this is probably what blinded me to how one dimensional the characters were, and how things in the series just didn't make sense. Zechs is really my favorite character in the series, because he is one of the few characters with any character to him. Now, I think it is safe to assume that Duo is the favorite character/pilot for most people. This is probably because he has character to him, and isn't: an emotionless robot, who is always trying to kill himself, a misogynist Chineses teenager who always wants to fight people, another emotionless robot, who is a pierrot/clown, or a soft spoken homosexu- I mean, dude surrounded by his all male posse. Hardly any of the main pilots develop as characters. I think that maybe Wu Fei doesn't hate women in the end, but I'm not really sure. Quatre is still the same guy as he was in the beginning. The same goes for Trowa, but I guess he gets a girlfriend. Heero, I don't know; maybe he doesn't like trying to kill himself or Relena. Also, Relena is the most boring female protagonist in any Gundam Series.

The mecha designs were always a plus in my view, for Wing. I have always loved the OZ mobile suits more than the actual Gundams though. I don't know, seeing division of specialty in units really puts a smile on my face. What doesn't put a smile on my face is seeing what can arguably be the strongest weapon ever in a Gundam series, in the hands of the main character in the first episode. Gigantic beam cannon. This thing can completely disintegrate 2 Aries units in one shot? What stops it from simply blow enormous holes in the Earth's surface? This was a bad idea. I think the writers realized that too, seeing as Heero doesn't stay in possession of Wing for like 80%(At least less than half) of the series. All the other Gundams had limitations. Heavy Arms would always run out of ammo, DeathScythe only had one ranged weapon, Shen Long didn't have a true ranged weapon(flame thrower and extendable arm), and SandRock was just terrible. I couldn't stand it when the enemy mobile suits(Taurus/Virgo?) got the beam shields. When they start dominating the Earth Force's mobile suits, I just stop caring. I know the real conflict is between them and the Gundams, but it's just a big downer. I didn't feel this upset when I saw the beam shields in F91 or Victory, because those shields didn't cover the entire body, and became disabled in close quarters. What really pissed me off was when the enemy units started to be unmanned mobile suits. Awful, it doesn't even feel satisfying to see them get destroyed. It's not like I like to see people die, but I just get the feeling that they can just pump out another mobile suit to replace the one that was just destroyed like it was nothing.

Things that don't make sense.
-Zechs immediately knows what a Gundam is in the first episode. How does he know what it is? None had existed before, so where does he get this information from? He simply knows so that the audience is told what Heero's mobile suit is. As if we didn't know.
-Quatre lands on Earth. Where does his mobile suit posse come from? Did they come with him on the meteor? It looked the same size as all the rest of them, so that's probably not true. So were they developed on Earth in like a secret factory or something? If so, then why not just build SandRock on Earth and fly Quatre to Earth on a shuttle? Maybe the Gundanium(worst contribution to the Gundam universe ever) was only on the colony. Although, if there was a secret factory that could produce mobile suits, why not just create an army of them and take the Earth forces by surprise?
-Heero must secretly be Superman. I really don't understand how a person can survive falling out of a building after being shot the day before(I might be wrong, but I think Duo shoots him the arm?), and still be well enough to run away. Or when he survives that explosion when he was really close to the mobile suit he self destructed. This isn't as big a deal to me, it is anime after all.
-Trowa wasn't the intended pilot for Heavy Arms, but seems to be an expert pilot anyway. I guess expert pilot is an overstatement. All he does is really just walk around and shoot things all day. Maybe he read the manual on his way to Earth.

This was only from what I remembered and the first 5 episodes. But really, it's only a cartoon, so who really cares?

RANT COMPLETE.

08th MS Team was a great show. I absolutely love mecha anime where the mecha are semi-slow and clunky, like Votoms. It just gives off a sense of realism to the show. While when I watch something like 00 or Seed(later half) I do feel the improbability of their movements. The characters were likable and you really start to care for them as the series progresses. We see Shiro grow from a rookie to quite the capable pilot and leader. I also like that excluding the first episode, the entire series takes place on Earth, with an atmosphere. Even though it was cool to see him shoot down the custom Zaku with a Ball. I still need to watch the movie that came out for 08th MS Team. I think it's supposed to take place between when Shiro gets shot down and when he gets the Ez8.

novan wrote:Ha ha ha yeah. For strike witches if you don't try and comprehend how everything works and why it works that way it is a fun series. Unlike me trying to get a grasp on it all. It's just the first time I watched it I had no idea what I was getting into and didn't expect it. I never heard of it and just found it on hulu. Read the description and it sounded really interesting and then pow. But yes I agree with you it's a fun series. I didn't know they were based of real people. Huh that's really interesting.

Yeah, I can see where you can become blindsided if you didn't know what you were in for before watching. The series has its fun moments, but for the most part tries to stay on the series side when dealing with the neuroi. The way season one ended, I thought that was the end of the series. So it really surprised me that they made a season two. I really should finish season two, but I have a bad habit of not wanting to finish series that I like, because I get a little heartbroken when they end. I don't know, I'm just weird like that. Maybe the series lives on in my heart, even thought I know that it has already ended in my head.

satomihidee wrote:If you like fan service, Mayo Chiki is a good bet.

My friend is crazy about this series. I think it's his favorite this season, that or Usagi Drops. I think I'll pass on it for now. Rou Kyuu Bu! is more or less my fanservice this season. Oh yeah, elementary school girls playing basketball. That's where it's at. LoL, just kidding. But I do enjoy the show. It seems a little unrealistic, so I imagine that the main character is in college instead and perhaps they are in middle school or high school. Yuru Yuri is also fun to watch.

On a more serious note, I just started watching the Break Blade/Broken Blade movie/OVA series. I couldn't find a trailer so the opening will have to do. The 6th(last) movie recently came out, so I feel I can finally start watching it. I am a real sucker for mecha anime that is still hand drawn and not CG crap.

Mayoi Chiki is a <3

Have to say its my all time favorite for this season. Chinese outfit Subaru sama! Kya~

Dantalian no Shoka is not what I had expected but in a good way. I think the only reason I gave this series a chance was that it was previewed at the end of GoSick, I think. If you don't like the first episode then you might not like the rest of the series.

There are a few other series I'm watching but I don't think its worth me mentioning or at least that's my opinion.

I got through Air Gear, Pumpkin Scissors and Xam'd. I rather liked all of these. Again they all have their own qualities that make them good but for the most part there wasn't anything that really made me dislike it like some of the other things I've watched that certain things just stick out.

I'm trying to get through Dragonaut: The Resonance. The story keeps me interested enough to keep watching, don't really care too much for the dragon designs and some of the design chooses for one character in particular make be baffled a little but it's just a small bit of fan service so oh well no big deal. But what gets me the most is this one character. Geez! The guy is the main character's best friend and he get's all sore that he took his dragon. I mean yeah I get it the dragon was meant to be his and was essentially made for him (trust me it gets explained in the series how this all works) and he acts like an immature kid on the school playground. It annoys me because that seems to be the only thing driving him. I went back to see if I missed something but no it doesn't appear to be the case. And this drives the character so much to the point he wants to kill the main character and actually tries a few times. I don't know this bugs the hell out of me cause it just seems like such a stupid reason and makes him annoying as heck. If anyone has seen this series and I missed something please go ahead and correct me. I'd like that very much since this seems a bit confusing and annoying.

Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes!
Suite Precure♪
Danball Senki (obscure children's show and this is gonna get a dub soon ohh boy)
Hanasaku Iroha
Inazuma Eleven GO
NO.6
Mawaru Penguindrum

Yes all I watch are kids shows. They're easy to keep up with when you watch them live. I'm trudging very slowly through Fresh Precure! too. And I was planning to finish the entire franchise during the summer geez (only this and Heartcatch are left~).

And after Precure would be my (old) magical girl expedition. Can't wait to watch Hana no Ko Lunlun! * u*

Ao no Exorcist, Uta no Prince-sama, and Mawaru Penguindrum... XD They are all pretty interesting. Uta no Prince-sama is targeted to girls though, since it is based on an Otome game.

I need to watch Tiger and Bunny but I just...haven't. lol

Also @ novan Pumpin Scissors! YAY~~~ Sorry I got into the series ...four years ago and have yet to meet anyone who has even heard of it. I liked it a lot Alice is an interesting character. XD

@lonewarrior666: Nice! I really liked Pumpkin Scissors. It's one of those series for me that from episode 1 I knew hands down I was gonna like it. I didn't need to get about a quarter way through it to convince me. I just liked it. Ha ha ha yes Alice is a rather interesting character. Very interesting.

Anime currently watching:
Cowboy Bebop (for the fifth time)
Fullmetal Alchemist (both Brotherhood and the original)
Detective Conan (mainly the movies)
Nichijou (can't help myself)
Majin Tantei Negami Neuro (doesn't quite compare with the manga, which I really liked)
Trigun (was in the mood for earlier Johnny Young Basch and I already had watched Power Rangers)
One Piece (I'm waiting in anticipation for the time skip. October cannot come quickly enough!)

Non-anime shows that I'm watching, but I just need to mention:
Gokaiger (honestly thought I would never watch a Sentai series, but the fact that they can transform into any of the earlier teams caught my attention)
*sigh* I hate to admit it, but My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (I just finally had to see what the big deal was. I've watched Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Powerpuff Girls growing up and I read a lot of shoujo manga so I don't mind watching girly shows; only bad ones.)

Yeah, I went backwards.. ._.'' I'll be watching 8th MS Team, Stardust Memory, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam again after I finish MSG....lol. Hard for me to say who's my favorite character (except for the famous Amuro and Char of course) but I DO have some favs for Zeta and ZZ. I would type out my likes/dislikes from each Gundam series I've watched but that would take quite a long time.. a long time.. Is it mean for me to say I'm glad Katz bit the dust? :(

Most fans of the franchise will tell you not to waste your time with GSD. It is pretty much regarded as the worst in the series. Although, if you like the C.E. universe, then you might as well watch it. Personally, I think some characters ended better off with Seed's ending. There's a very emotional scene in this series, that I find makes the series bearable. Fyi, never go on to /m and say you like GSD. The people there will honestly think you are trolling them.

On the note of Gundam, I'm watching Gundam Age. I really didn't like where the franchise was going when they made this. I don't think that the animation style and Gundam mix well. I like them separately, but not together. They make the series seem childish. I really don't know how old the protagonist is. Is Flit in elementary, middle, or high school? The way the series is animated, it would lead me to believe that he was in elementary school, but he is actually 14.

Aliens in Gundam? Do not want. But, I suppose it had to happen one day. Idk, it just really makes this series seem like Gundam Frontier(Macross F). Despite my dislike for the idea of aliens, I actually really like the design of the the UE robots(mobile suit isn't quite the right word). On the other hand, all the EFF mobile suits look terrible. Even the design of the Gundams in this series are okay at best. Also, don't like the look of the ship. It looks like it was built out of legos(no disrespect to legos). Unless the front splits open and shoots a mega particle cannon, then we can move on.

There's nothing wrong with the characters themselves. I don't particularly dislike any one of them yet. I LoL at the fact that his friend looks like a fat elf with that hat. Grandpa character is cool too. I guess since the way the series is animated, it can get away with making characters this way. Since the series is already on the silly side. I also like epic beard captain, he just seems to have a little evil side to him.

Still too early to make judgment on the series, but so far it's worth continuing to watch.

GSD is the Twilight version of Gundam. As for Gundam AGE I am really, REALLY not digging the designs of the mobile suits at all. You can call me a U.C. fanboy but I would droll over a Zaku II than a Gafran. Even for Gunpla building I would rather build a Gundam SEED model than a AGE model... and THAT's saying a lot.

I like it(Gafran), it reminds me of Cybuster. I like mecha that have animal characteristics. You're right though, the models for AGE are ugly. LoL at the fact that the beam spray gun sound effect is the same one used for the blasters in Star Wars. Also, beam spiraling is stupid.

Another reason why I wouldn't even glance at AGE is because from what I've been reading the boy (who looks like he belongs in Digimon) who pilots the 'Gundam' somehow 'knew' how to pilot the mobile suit unlike Amuro when he piloted the RX-78-2 didn't even have a clue on what to do. That's only from what I've been READING though and I also read that the boys mother has been burned alive? So far I've watched almost all of the U.C. era Gundam series (except Char's Counterattack) and I ALMOST have an interest to watch 00 and Unicorn but man.. it's gonna take quite a lot of motivation for me to even watch it. If the series (or ANY Anime in general) has a good story, I'll give it a shot and watch it. I also want to take into account if the Anime has been messed with from it's Manga version I won't even bother (good example is Ah! My Goddess!).

But enough with my ranting for Gundam, right now I'm watching; Initial D (all stages) and Wangan Midnight.

To defend how he knows how to pilot the Gundam, he actually helped design it(yeah, he's a genius blah blah blah, wtf). So he was never the intended pilot, but he still posses some knowledge of it's operation. I think if you are a fan of any franchise, you should give any series from it a shot, a few episodes at least. The only way I can make informed opinions on the series is by first hand knowledge, but we don't all have time to watch 26+ episode series. So that's okay.

I don't know if you were talking specifically about AGE or just anime in general, but there is no manga for AGE. At least none that feature the storyline which the show is based. I really don't like shonen manga or ones with a lot of action in them(Bleach in particular, but for other reasons). I feel that manga can't convey the action well, given its limited space. Shoujo manga seems to take to this medium very well though, imo. Also, I enjoy it when anime and manga have differences between the two. Unless something is different, then there is very little keeping my interest in something that I have viewed previously, even if I liked it. I hear that Unicorn is also has slight differences amongst the anime and novel, so you probably want to stay clear. If you were to watch 00, only watch first season and pretend second season doesn't exist.

Cheers.

I was pretty much talking about anime in general... lol. Well, at least it makes sense to me that he knows how to pilot the mobile suit but I still find it a bit... cheap. I guess I can't argue since it just hit me that Kamille Bidan designed Zeta Gundam. I'm preeeeettty sure I watched a couple episodes of 00 but that was quite a long time ago so I can't say for certain if I liked it or not. The only thing I really, REALLY hate about Gundam is the 'god mode' mobile suits. I don't mean to sound like a crybaby but lets have a recall on the main characters mobile suits that gets destroyed;

RX-78-2: Destroyed
Ez-8: Destroyed
Blue Destiny (Manga): Destroyed
NT-1 Alex: Destroyed
GP-01, GP-02, GP-03(?): Destroyed
Zeta Gundam: Destroyed
ZZ Gundam: I can't say... more like I forgot. >_>''
Wing Zero Custom (or pretty much ALL of the 5 pilots MS): Destroyed.. literally

I didn't watch Turn A, Unicorn, Victory, or any others but if you can chime in I'd appreciate it. To sum it up, I just hate 'god mode' mobile suits that move in such a unrealistic fashion and have LOLOMGBIGAZZGUNSGOPEWPEWPEW weapons. Only exception I have for that is Gundam Wing. Also, I figure I'd try my luck and ask but if anyone can actually answer my question I'll give you a million cookies.

Question: My ex had me watch this anime with the plot going something like this... sister and brother go to a 'family reunion'. Reunion turns out to be some kind of weird ritual.. sister gets severely injured (shot I believe) but lives. Sister harnesses some sort of power... Father gets pissed.. starts shouting that the brother/son should be the one with the powers. I think some sort of agency interrupts the reunion.. Father shoots himself in the head point blank.. Sister and brother gets rescued and my memory is blank after that. If anyone happens to know what the name of the anime I would very much appreciate it.

But yeah, I'll try and give the other Gundam series a shot but I'm going to make believe that G Gundam doesn't exist. >_>;;

You and I have opposite feelings towards Wing and G, I think. I haven't watched G in a long time(since before it was aired on Cartoon Network). At the time, I hated it too. It stuck out like a sore thumb, in contrast to the other series. However, now I find it okay. I realize that the series itself knows how campy and cheesy it is, and doesn't try to hide the fact. Hella racist Gundams, shinning fingers, and alliance shuffles. Its like it knows that it isn't meant to be taken seriously. Pretty weird fact, most of the people I talk to about G Gundam actually liked the cockpit better in G, than in normal series. I don't think they were particularly fans of the franchise though. One of my female friends only remembered the part where they close up on Domon's butt, LoL. I just think that it was a really funny(not in a comedic sense) Gundam series, where you don't need to take it seriously. When the majority of the series are meant to be very serious, I think it's fine when a couple are just for shits and giggles. Especially at the rate Gundam series were coming out in the 90's. I think AGE is probably try and be serious, but with its animation style(Inazuma Eleven), I'm not sure how effective it will be.

Idk, I just didn't like the fact that Wing started off by giving Heero the strongest weapon in the entire franchise. Given, that Amuro or any of the newtypes, could probably have just evaded it. I do like the fact that most of the AU Gundam series shy away from having newtypes in them, though. I feel like Wing tried to be serious, but really it semi-wasn't.

On the subject of the anime you are asking about, I have no clue. Do you have an approximate time from when it came out though? Like, 80's, 90's, 2000's(00's wtf?)? If you have no luck here, then you might chance asking /a/, but I hear that place is full of douches. Good luck.

I wish I knew.. the art style made it look like it was in the 90's. Don't get me wrong, I don't purely hate G Gundam.. I thought some of the mobile suits looked kick *?:" (i.e. Shadow Gundam) and since I was watching it long time ago I thought the idea of having mobile suits just beat the crap out of each other was awesome until my friend introduced me to 8th MS Team and the more 'mature' Gundam series. I wish that 3 part OVA of Gunpla Beginners G would turn into a actual series... I would totally watch it. Hey, may I ask what your favorite mobile suit is? It's not often I come across other Gundam fans. xD

Yeah, after the slew of OP Gundams(Seed & 00), I came to appreciate the more realistic mecha anime. Despite it being really boring in certain arcs, I really like Votoms. The AT battles all seem realistic, and nothing too off the wall gets thrown in the show. 08th MS would be the closest thing to it, with 0080 coming in a close second.

I honestly haven't thought about which MS is my favorite, since I also don't get to talk to many Gundam fans either. I think I'm going to cheat a bit, and break it down a little further. My favorite grunt would have to be the Jegan probably. This MS remains in service for 30+ years; we see it in Char's Counter Attack and all the way till F91. Even though most of the Federation grunts look similar, I like it the best. I like the R-Gun and G-Cannon from F91 too, but I don't really consider them grunts(they are, but idk). To be honest, I pretty much like any MS that's red. It's not a Red Comet thing, it was my favorite color growing up. The Sazabi, Gerbera Tetra, Sinanju, they are all beast. My favorite Gundam is probably X. It was the first series I watched, and I guess it just stuck with me.

I would have to say my top pick would have to be ZZ Gundam. Yeah, it was overpowered but it was limited on how much power it could dish out. Second would have to be Hi-Nu.. Sure it only existed in text but after reading on the Net that the Hi-Nu was the more 'complete' mobile suit (nothing against the Nu Gundam), I would have LOVED to see it in animation. I'd say the Gouf Custom would be third... nothing against Ramba Ral but Norris would just eat Ral's Gouf like nothing. I too also like mobile suits in red but I'm a sucker for anything in blue (*cough* Blue Destiny Unit 01 *cough*). I know people hated ZZ Gundam in the first half but I thought it was a good chuckle and when the second half started the series got uber serious. I never did bother watching or even noticing Turn A Gundam because the thought of having the cockpit in the crotch and the fact that MS sprouts butterfly wings was beyond what I could take.

Almost finished both seasons of Clannad but gave up near the end of the second one. That one I admit made me tear up a little bit. It wasn't worth finishing. Just got confusing with these alternative universes. Finished Sands of Destruction. Very entertaining.

As far as anime goes I'm taking a break from now on.

Been really digging a French show called Wakfu, based on the games. Its honestly the best animated show I've seen in years and oddly enough its done in Adobe Flash.... but I'll be damned if its still not the best animation Ive seen in a TV series. The designs are a cross between anime and a Belgian comic strip.

Since I'm such a old time yokai themed junkie I'm re-watching Natsume Yojincho and then starting up Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan. Now don't get me wrong I LOVE all historical dramas and old yokai themes but they usually are based around young men. Does anyone know any yokai/historical dramas that are based around or meant for a little older of a generation? I'm getting a little tired of having the main character either be in middle school or early high school.

Hmmm, problem with that is there is little mature stuff like that isn't ultra violent or outright porn (the films by Yoshiaki Kawajiri are borderline). I'm not to familiar with the more recent stuff but if your willing to go back a bit maybe Takahashi's Mermaid stuff, 3x3 Eyes, maybe Mushi-shi or Bakemonogatari for more recent stuff.... though I haven't seen either.

Detective Conan would still have to be my favorite anime of all time. I just love the idea of having a kid solve all the crimes that occur, though I know that he really isn't a kid to begin with. The story is just really nice and great at that.

Inuyasha has been something I have been watching a lot of time lately probably because of some influence my younger niece had on me.
